Review: Raleigh Ritchie – Bad Place [+ Tour dates]

In Hip Hop by Kweku Ackom-Mensah

Bad Place is a particular type of Hip Hop that I am dubbing ‘Stumble Bop’.

Stumble Bop – (st-um-bul-bop) noun: A lesser-known Hip Hop subgenre which gives the feeling of a rhythmic walk, strut or stagger, taking on the particular gaunt of said beat and or lyrics.
See also ‘Great Ass’ (unidentified, possibly Flying Lotus) and Cyprus Hill’s ‘I want to get high’.

Raleigh Ritchie’s ‘Bad Place’, off the Just Jim motion picture soundtrack, adopts the swagger of a down on his luck guy and the lyrics, delivered through interspersed and cleverly used vocal distortions paint a picture of a man who has either a) just taken a mild hiding or b) paused to make some music between his third pint and his second joint. By the way, that’s not to say that the lyrics are sloppy, quite the opposite.

This is a talented UK artist pushing the real life vibe and messages that we can all key into whether we’re being turned away at the door, having a hood up head down hangover or trying to figure out what we said to that girl last night that’s made her so damn quiet this morning. Wicked track… and yes, he is also Grey Worm from Game of Thrones!

Making moves in some interesting circle’s, this year Raleigh Ritchie has worked with producer Sounwave, Kendrick Lamar’s go to beat-maker and also supported George Ezra and RUN DMC. If this track is anything to go by then his is debut album in 2016 should be more than decent.

Raleigh Ritchie’s debut album will be released in 2016. He will be performing a UK headline tour on the dates below.
